You can have your license revoked after being convicted of a DWI offense. Refusal to take a breath test can also result in license revocation. You have to turn in your license to the DMV and it will be illegal for you to drive.
After the license revocation period you may start the licensing procedure again, but this doesn't mean having a 'clean slate' - convictions you had with the revoked license will remain part of your driving record.
